Reading With Pride

An ESSL LGBTQIA Book List has been created by staff to celebrate Pride beyond the month of June! ESSL members and friends are welcome to add to the list. Please contact for access.

During the Reading with Pride Forum on 6/30, Youth Education Co-Directors Megan McCarthy and Courtnie Scott-Cammarata also discussed the rise of challenges in Missouri (and across the U.S.). Here are some action items you can take to support the right to read:

SUPPORT diverse authors and stories by purchasing books and/or checking them out at the library!

VOTE in school board elections and pay attention to what’s happening at the local and state level.

RAISE AWARENESS by sharing on socials, writing letters to the editor, or even starting a Banned Book Club.

CELEBRATE Banned Books Week (September 22-28, 2024) and Right to Read Day (April 6, 2025)

DONATE to organizations like Freedom to Read Foundation and EveryLibrary.

EXPRESS GRATITUDE to public and school librarians (it’s tough out there right now!), board members, and elected officials who support the freedom to read.
