Tuesday Women's Association (TWA)
Tuesday Women's Association (TWA) meets on Tuesdays from August through June at the Society in the Becker Room in the lower level. Gatherings begin at 10 a.m. with coffee and socializing. The one-hour programs begin at 10:30 a.m. Some members stay for a brown bag lunch and conversation. TWA’s programs cover a wide range of ethical, cultural and artistic topics and are open to all interested women. Ethical Society membership is not required.
- 1st Tuesday - a member book review.
- 2nd & 4th Tuesday - outside speakers. On second Tuesdays from January through April, TWA co-sponsors, with the American Association of University Women, the International Relations Lecture Series.
- 3rd Tuesday - something special, possibly a party or a business meeting, or a celebration of some sort.
- 5th Tuesday - we take a field trip to one of St. Louis’s exceptional locations.
We raise money for local social causes through bazaars, bake sales, and the sale of jams and jellies that we make.
Although TWA has been meeting for over 50 years, our predecessor organization, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Ethical Society, was established more than 100 years ago. Our purpose is to work for the general good of the Society, to foster fellowship among our members, to provide programs of interest, and to support selected social causes.
An interesting reference to the women of the Ethical Society of St. Louis is found in an article published on April 23, 1896, in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. In 1896, the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Ethical Society of St. Louis, the first convention of the Union of Ethical Societies was held in St. Louis. One of the public forums of the convention was “Woman’s Influence on Public Affairs.” The newspaper article under the subheading of “Gathering of Brainy Women from Five Big Cities,” noted that the audience was full of “young women and elderly women and women of betwixt and between, but all of them earnest and thoughtful. They represented the intellectual side of woman’s life in St. Louis, and in the cities of the union.”
TWA is proud to continue this tradition from the 19th century to the 21st. We value one another’s company, skills, and interests. In the United States women fought for and won a radical change of status in the 20th century. No longer are we confined to restricted spheres and roles. TWA members have had careers spanning decades, often in professions and occupations from which we were previously barred. While retirement is not required for membership, most of us are enjoying it.
TWA’s programs cover a wide range of ethical, cultural, and artistic topics and are open to all interested women. Ethical Society membership is not required. Annual dues are $20, collected in May and June. We raise money for local social causes through bake sales, First Sunday Lunches, and the sale of homemade jams, jellies, and pickles.
We meet on Tuesdays from August through June at the Society, in the Becker Room on the lower level. Gatherings begin at 10:00 am with coffee and socializing. The one-hour programs begin at 10:30 am. Some members stay for a brown bag lunch and conversation.
