The rat race to “keep up with the Joneses” starting in the 1950s was about “things,” i.e., homes, cars, appliances. The “gerbil” race today is about children: getting your kids in the “right” school, on the “right” select sports teams, building the perfect resume. Kids are growing up too fast, being treated as adults, and are stressed out and overextended.
