I just found this on wisdomquotes.com, a great quotation site run by Ethical Leader Jone Lewis of the Northern Virginia Society. I’ve probably read it before, but you know how sometimes you read something and you just want to blow it up and plaster it all over your walls? That’s how I feel about this. I always forget about Marcus Aurelius when I’m asked those what-dead-person-would-you-like-to-have-dinner-with questions, but I bet he’d be a good choice.
Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones. I am not afraid. — Marcus Aurelius
