Please come to my “100 Native Species Yard/House Tour” on Sunday afternoon, June 1st from 2pm to 5pm. My husband, Gary and I built a small, energy efficient retirement house in Kirkwood with a “green” builder in 2007 and I landscaped with only native Missouri trees, bushes, vines, grasses and sedges, and wildflowers. My garden has received the Gold rating from the Audubon Society’s Bringing Nature Home program. My husband will be happy to talk about our house and the geo-thermal furnace, SIPs panels, hot water heaters, insulation in the tornado shelter, all of which result in our utility bills averaging $100 per month.

I’ll be your tour guide in the garden to help you discover wild hairy petunia, button bush, smoke tree, an obedient plant that really obeys, cliff goldenrod and my Norwegian scarecrow, Marta Fugelscraemse. We’ll have refreshments, including tastings of beauty berry pudding made from my beauty berry bushes, lawn chairs to relax in and a garden guide map. Wear comfortable shoes! Our home address is 504 Creekside Place in Kirkwood.

Local restaurants, Crushed Red will make a 15% donation to the Society for member purchases before or after the tour, and Sunset 44 will offer a free glass of wine or dessert at dinner after the tour.

We’ll have fun at this fundraiser and the Ethical Society will thank you. Download NativeSpeciesGreenTour flyer.
