Blackmon v Missouri: The Faith-Lead Challenge to Missouri’s Abortion Ban

March 10 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

After the fall of Roe v Wade, Missouri became the first state in the country to impose a near total ban on abortion, adding to a cascade of other access restrictions. The law includes biblical references in its text, and was justified by lawmakers on explicitly religious grounds, imposing one religious viewpoint of when life begins on the rest of the state. Supported by Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the National Women’s Law Center, a group of 14 Missouri clergy of varying faith traditions brought a lawsuit challenging Missouri’s abortion laws as a violation of the separation of church and state, arguing that when lawmakers impose their religious beliefs into law, they violate our constitution’s wall separating church and state — a constitutional principle that protects everyone’s religious freedom, from the devout to the nonbeliever. This case underscores a fundamental clash between religious beliefs and constitutional principles in the fight for abortion rights in Missouri and beyond.
