Healthy Community Dialogue: How To Give and Receive Feedback Well with Interim Director Amy L. Miller
November 19, 2023 @ 9:45 am - 10:45 am
Feedback is extremely useful for determining what is and isn’t working, whether that be in relationships, in families, on teams, or (in our case) as members of communities in transition. That said, there is a significant difference between “I want to give my opinion” and “I have constructive feedback to offer.” Feedback is, by nature, actionable. It isn’t just “Here is what I think,” it gives specific information on what is working well, what we like and want more of, as well as what we don’t like and would like less of. There is also space for “why” in healthy feedback loops, e.g., “I would like more of this because it will have X benefit” or “I think we should do less of this because it causes Y problems.”
With all these details, sometimes it’s hard to know even what IS feedback and when it is fair and kind to offer it, much less how to give it (and receive it) in a way that the other person is able to receive. Let’s talk about it!
