Did you ever wonder about the significant ideas of Western Civilization and how they affect our world today? The Great Books Foundation in Chicago has assembled a variety of anthologies with key selections from ancient times (The Epic of Gilgamesh) to the present (the short stories of Margaret Atwood). Each selection is from an original work, or a translation. These are usually short, yet often challenging.
Starting this September, our Great Books discussion group at the Ethical Society will be meeting to talk about one selection per month from an anthology called Keeping Things Whole: Readings in Environmental Science. This anthology is available for purchase for $24.95 from the Great Books Foundation. Authors include René Descartes, Henry David Thoreau, Barry Commoner and Bill McKibben.
Those of us who have participated in the Ethical Society Great Books discussion group would love to have more folks join us. We are not experts, but our group can sure fill an hour and a half with good conversation!
Our group will meet at the Ethical Society in the Board Room at 7:30 PM on the second Wednesday of each month, September through May. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 8, at 7:30 PM. We’d love to see you there!
