What is love? Is America turning away from love? These are two of the main questions that bell hooks asks in her influential book, All about Love. Could cultivating a love ethic help us confront the acts of hatred we are experiencing today? In the West, we tend to think of love as a feeling, a commitment, or a caretaking relationship, but this will not help us address the structural injustices dividing our society. We can feel strongly about, commit to and care for another person without fulfilling the conditions of genuine, transformative love. This raises the question: what definition of love will allow us to create a better society?
