Ethical Navigators Weekly Update – November 3

  • Update: Our November outing will be a trip to Jefferson Barracks on November 16. The older groups will visit the Missouri Civil War Museum, and the younger groups will have other activities. All will be able to hike the adjoining park.
  • Our next General Meeting will be November 10 at 9 am.
  • Update: We had a productive Council Meeting this morning.
  • Update: Most leadership vacancies have been filled, but we could use another volunteer to assist our Stargazer Leader.

November 16
We plan to visit Jefferson Barracks on November 16 to explore the Navigators focus area of Freedom. The older groups will go to the Missouri Civil War Museum; we originally thought all would go, but we have since learned that the material at the Museum is designed for fourth grade and higher and is too mature from younger children. The Stargazers and younger Junior Navigators will have alternate activities while the older Junior Navigators, Senior Navigators, and Travelers will be in the Museum. All participants will be able to spend time exploring the grounds of the park.

The tentative plan is to meet on November 16 after lunch, at 12:30. The museum is not free: $7 for adults, $5 for children 5-12, Free for under 5 (though, again, we will not be taking smaller children into the museum’s exhibits). Haley Pepper and Bob Heck are planning this outing.

We have early plans to attend a holiday concert and learn about concert etiquette, but this is far from firm. Bob Heck is investigating the details. Alternately, we discussed a hike at the Chain of Rocks Bridge or a visit to the Audubon Center at Riverlands.

General Meetings

November 10
The November General Meeting will be at 9 am on November 10th in the Library at the Ethical Society. We will discuss topics on the theme of Freedom and service.

November 3 Council Meeting

This morning, three members of the Council and two guests met in the Ethical Society Nursery School’s Green Room:
Lance Finney (Communications), Bob Heck (Junior Navigators assistant leader and future Travelers leader), Jim Jordan (Travelers), Haley Pepper (Travelers assistant leader), and Ellen Wilson (Stargazers). Rebecca Karlen (Uniform) and Stuart Morse (Senior Navigators) were attending the Navigators USA National Convention in Chicago.

The meeting was mostly focused on the details of the upcoming outings and meetings. In addition, we discussed the following topics:

  • 2014 Planning
    • Outings – a subcommittee of the Council will meeting in November or December to discuss ideas for 2014 Outings that fall into the Navigators Curriculum.
    • Finances – In January, we will start our new year, which will mean new dues. We decided to keep our uniform pricing the same, but we provisionally agreed to increase the cost of the per-family membership dues to cover the cost our Chapter will start paying to the National Organization this year (it was waived for our first year).
    • Advertising – In order to advertise our new year to the Society community, Finney volunteered to write an article for the January Society Newsletter. For the advertisement to be meaningful, we will need to decide our January meeting schedule by December 15, the Newsletter submission deadline.
    • Leadership Transitions – In December, the terms for our current leadership will expire, and we expect that some “new blood” will come into the group. We have one volunteer to take the position of Treasurer (Tom Draney) and one to take the position of Traveler Leader (Bob Heck). These are not finalized choices – if anyone else wants to put his or her name into the hat, they are welcome. Additionally, we could have additional help with group assistants, particularly for the Stargazers, which is the only group which currently does not have an assistant leader. Thanks to Tom and Bob, and please consider backing up Ellen Wilson in our Stargazer Leadership!
