Outings

June 26-28: Camping/Caves/River

Twenty people from eight families had a wonderful weekend at Onondaga State Park. Though Friday rain kept us away until Saturday morning, we had beautiful weather once we arrived (80° highs at the end of June in southern Missouri are to be appreciated).
Our primary activities at the park were geocaching and caving.
  • The Finney family had some experience with geocaching, and they shared their experience with the Chapter. Mr. Finney gave a lesson on geocaching, and then we hiked two trails and looked in the amphitheater to find three total geocaches. The Navigators enjoyed the geocaches so much that they spent much of their free time creating unofficial geocaches around the campsite and giving each other clues.
  • We took a tour of Cathedral Cave, the less-visited of the two public caves in the park. We saw impressive stalagmites, stalactites, columns, and flowstones. We also were fortunate to see the endangered grotto salamander, thanks to the keen eyes of our guide, Mike.
Findally, we also had a lot of fun with general camping activities, like cooking a Mexican casserole in dutch ovens and hoisting Old Glory.
Some pictures are available on Facebook (thanks to Lance Finney, Haley Pepper, and Bruce Wulff)

July 17-19: Camping/Float Trip
This event is scheduled at Meramec State Park for Friday July 17 through Sunday July 19.

We have 5 camp sites reserved, 105, 107, 108, 110, and 111.  They are all adjoining.  6 person maximum per site and 2 car maximum per site, or a total of 30 campers.  If we have greater interest we can look at adding sites.  Site 111 has ADA accommodations.

Friday.  Set up camp as early as 3 p.m. Dinner on own.
Saturday.  Communal breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Sunday.  Communal breakfast, pack lunch for floating.  Check out is 2 p.m. but flexible.

Floating is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Here is a link to Floating Information:  http://www.meramecpark.com/floating.html
From our experience the 5 mile float takes 2.5 hours for canoes and 4.5 hours for rafts.

Camping costs will be $25 for ages 7 and up and $20 for ages 6 and under.
Floating costs will be dependent upon preferences for floating mode but will average around $22.

Please complete the RSVP survey by June 30!  This will be a tremendous help to us for planning accommodations, meals, and floating, so we can confirm accurate pricing for this event..  A follow up communication will be sent out shortly after the responses are reviewed.

Note: because watercraft requires a non-refundable reservation, we will require payment from those who RSVP, even if they cannot come (barring major extenuating circumstances).
