Ethical Navigators Weekly Update – June 25, 2017

    >Update: We had a great time at our Camping/Sailing outing at Carlyle Lake.
  • Initial planning has started for camping in July and Eclipse viewing in August.
  • New: Our next General Meeting will be on July 16 at 9:45am at the Ethical Society.
  • Our next Council Meeting will be July 9 at 9:30.

June 23-25: Camping/Sailing
We had a wonderful weekend at Carlyle Lake, camping on the lakeshore and sailing and playing in the lake. For many of us, this was our first exposure to sailing – thanks so much to Haley Pepper for organizing, and to Bronson for being our instructor.

Friday night started with the Seniors (and Polaris Juniors) accompanying Bronson on a sail across the lake, to a group camp site that the Senior Leaders had set up for the night. The Juniors and Stargazers camped near the marina.

Saturday morning, the Seniors and Polaris drove back to the marina, and that’s where the main sailing lessons occurred. We broke into three groups: 1) Seniors and Polaris 2) Other Juniors 3) Stargazers. Each group had a lesson with Bronson on sailing.

For the Juniors and Stargazers, Bronson daisy-chained small boats and towed them from his kayak, giving a lesson on steering the boats along the way. For the Seniors, Bronson gave a lesson in sculling the small boats, followed by a lesson in recovering from a capsize.

After lunch, Bronson took many of us out on the lake on a larger sailboat (it was too windy for the intended beginner lessons with sails), and a few Juniors and Seniors got to ride on two-person sailboats with a family that was there for the day.

We ended Saturday sunlight time with a lot more playing in the water, near the boach.

Some photos are available on Facebook.

July 21-23: Camping/Floating
We have camping reservations in place to return to Meramec State Park for camping and floating. Andy Ford and Ellen Wilson are planning this event. We will probably have some sun viewing activities to practice before the great eclipse. We also intent to have field day activities and a service event at Meramec.

August 21: Eclipse
We have a shelter reserved in Trail of Tears State Forest near Jonesboro, Illinois to be our base for viewing the great eclipse. In order to beat the crowds, we recommend that everyone leave early in the morning from St. Louis to have time to get through possible traffic (no one knows how traffic will be, but it’s better to be safe than sorry). We will plan to have activities and lunch at the shelter to fill time for early arrivers before the eclipse itself occurs (the partial eclipse will start around 9:52 am., and totality will last around 2.5 minutes at roughly 1:20 pm, weather willing).

We will have much more information about this as we get closer.
