Ethical Navigators Weekly Update – June 18, 2017

  • More details released for our camping/sailing outing in June. Please RSVP Today.
  • Initial planning has started for camping in July and Eclipse viewing in August.
  • Update: We learned a lot about sailing at the General Meeting this morning.
  • New: Our next Council Meeting will be July 9 at 9:30.

June 23-25: Camping/Sailing
We have plans in place to camp at Carlyle Lake in central Illinois, with sailing on the lake all day on Saturday (with possible opportunities to sail all day on Sunday).

Seniors and Polaris will be doing a special sail on Friday night and will be sleeping separately from the rest of the group, driving back in the morning (note: they were originally going to hike back in the morning, but we decided to cut that hike in order to focus on sailing). Seniors and Polaris should bring a sack dinner for Friday night, and they should pack a small bag with everything they need for the night (sleepwear, toothbrush, sleeping bag, etc). We will have a tent for boys and a tent for girls, and the Leaders will sleep separately between those tents.

Please see the flyer for details. Please RSVP to Haley Pepper by the end-of-day June 18 if you plan to go. Please provide Haley with the following information:

  • The number of people camping all weekend.
  • The number of people visiting for Saturday only.
  • The number of life jackets you will need for your children, and their weights.*
  • Whether you hope to participate in Fox and Hound race on Sunday (see the flyer for details).
  • Whether you hope that your children can participate in the Harbor Mice program on Sunday (age 8+, with limited spots for ages 6-7 depending on weather and maturity – see the flyer for details).

*We will arrange for life jackets for those who RSVP by June 18. If you decide to join us after that date, you will be responsible for bringing your own life jackets.

July 21-23: Camping/Floating
We have camping reservations in place to return to Meramec State Park for camping and floating. Andy Ford and Ellen Wilson are planning this event. We will probably have some sun viewing activities to practice before the great eclipse. We also intent to have field day activities and a service event at Meramec.

August 21: Eclipse
We have a shelter reserved in Trail of Tears State Forest near Jonesboro, Illinois to be our base for viewing the great eclipse. In order to beat the crowds, we recommend that everyone leave early in the morning from St. Louis to have time to get through possible traffic (no one knows how traffic will be, but it’s better to be safe than sorry). We will plan to have activities and lunch at the shelter to fill time for early arrivers before the eclipse itself occurs (the partial eclipse will start around 9:52 am., and totality will last around 2.5 minutes at roughly 1:20 pm, weather willing).

We will have much more information about this as we get closer.

General Meetings
June 18
In preparation for our Sailing and Camping outing next weekend, we learned a lot about sailing this morning. While the Seniors and Polaris Juniors planned for their special camping night, the Stargazers and other Juniors went through three stations to learn about life vests, knots, and sailboat terminology.

Thanks to the parents who jumped in to lead a group!

Some photos are available on Facebook.

July Council Meeting
Our next Council meeting is scheduled for 9:30 am on July 9 in the Nursery School Green Room. All are welcome to observe and comment.
