A Note from Katy

Hi everyone—my name is Katy and I’m the new membership coordinator here! I look forward to connecting with y’all IRL in the next coming weeks, but in the meantime, I wanted to share some info about my professional background and some random things about me.

I have a decade of experience supporting a variety of marketing and business development efforts with a focus in copywriting, graphic design, email marketing, and social media management. I’m currently on the marketing team at Human Animal Support Services (HASS) where I wear many hats in my full-time and remote role, from social media management and graphic design to client services and pr/media.

Before coming to HASS, I served as the marketing and development manager for HASS partner shelter, Gateway Pet Guardians where I co-managed volunteer committees relating to marketing and fundraising initiatives. Since 2019, I have worked in the nonprofit and animal welfare sector where I combine my background in all things creative with my passion for supporting the human-animal bond.

And now, it’s time for the random list of things about me—see below:

  • Born and raised in St. Charles County area—Catholic school K-5 and public school 6-12 (Fort Zumwalt)
  • Libra
  • Currently reside in Tower Grove South/South City with my husband, Justin and our animal rescue zoo—four resident cats, one chihuahua-mix pup, and a revolving door of foster cats/kittens
  • College alma mater is Loyola University-Chicago where I studied abroad in Rome for a semester
  • Enjoy quiet reflection and alone time to recharge, but enjoy quality time with others
  • Night owl
  • Caffeinated tea and Cherry Coke Zero are my daily pick-me-ups
  • Vegetarian
  • Literary genres: Contemporary fiction, memoirs, and dystopian sci-fi are my jam
  • Fav pastimes: reading, hiking, doodling, singing off-key, and struggling to learn crochet
  • Fav travel adventures: Italy, Greece, Oregon, and Northern California
  • Fav bands/artists: Fleetwood Mac, Death Cab for Cutie, and Trixie Mattel
  • Fav podcasts: Las Culturistas, I’ve Had It, Making Sense/Waking Up, and People, Pets, & Purpose (this last one is a shameless plug for a podcast I co-produce at HASS)
  • Current watchlist: The Bear, RuPaul’s Drag Race Allstars, and GOT House of the Dragon
  • I like to be active, but zero athletic prowess—former choir and theater kid over here! Dog walking at local shelters/herding cats, indoor hybrid training, hiking, and tossing a frisbee are as far as my athleticism goes. I did complete a half marathon in 2013 and did my first Tough Mudder with friends last April, so I do like a physical challenge from time to time.
  • Random fun fact: I was at Universal Studios with my family back in the late 90s/early 2000s and got picked randomly by producers to be on a Nickelodeon segment called  “Slime Time Live”where I played a game called “Musical Pies.” I only made it two rounds (I think) before having to pie myself in the face!
  • Check out some of my work samples here: Mutt/Mew Gala, HASS-OSCOPES Zodiac Signs, Reyna’s community rescue story (Reel), Gateway Pet Guardians’ Annual Impact Report: 2020, 2021, and 2022

I hope my note helps break the ice a bit and I look forward to learning more about all of you!  I’m currently in the office on Wednesdays from 9am-3pm and Sundays from 9am-1pm. Please stop by or schedule a time to meet with me.

I’m happy to be here and excited to work with y’all on growing this amazing community!

P.S. For those at the June 16 Forum, I appreciate your enthusiasm and participation in my impromptu Q&A following Amy’s convo. I admittedly was not prepared to tackle your questions, but I hope to address them together with the team at a later date. Please bear with me as I settle in and get acclimated here.  If you asked a question during my Q&A, please send me an email as I don’t want to miss any questions—I want to hear from you! 🙂
