Special Events at the Ethical Society of St. Louis In addition to the three celebratory festivals held each year, the Ethical Society of St. Louis sponsors several annual community gatherings for members and guests. For more information on any of the events listed here, send an e-mail to , or call the Society office at 314/991-0955.Fall Gathering The Society kicks off its annual season of Platforms and activities in September with a day-long retreat. Each year is different, but at each one we reaffirm our community ties. Attendees take meals together, enjoy workshops (both serious and fun), play game indoors, or take advantage of the outdoors with hiking, volleyball, or boating. Activities are scheduled throughout the day for children. Thanksgiving Community Dinner The Ethical Society's annual Thanksgiving community dinner is held each Thanksgiving Day in the afternoon. The event attracts those who wish to introduce family members or friends to their "extended Ethical family," as well as those who are without family locally. The Society provides the turkey—all others bring that dish (enough to share) without which it wouldn't be Thanksgiving for them. The afternoon is spent enjoying the food, playing games, and being together. Good Cheer Evening The Friday before Winter Festival in December, the entire Society turns out for a festive celebration. Luminaries line the drive and walkways, inviting attendees inside for a scrumptious potluck feast. A delightful program of music and drama (some might say skits) follows in the auditorium. The program traditionally ends with our original adaptation of the Scandinavian Santa Lucia legend. A member of our Youth Group wears a crown of burning candles in order to bring the light into our halls. Santa Lucia leads us to the foyer for spontaneous caroling, cookies, cider, and tree trimming. Music Festival Developed by the Ethical Society music director, the annual Music Festival showcases the talents of Ethical Society members and the Ethical Society chorus. The festival is often designed around a particular theme. Recent themes have included a survey of music by women composers and musical settings of poetry by Robert Frost.
