Doing our part to create a more just and loving world for all mandates a strong commitment on the part of Ethical Societies and their members to their communities. The Ethical Society has a long and distinguished history of service both to Ethical Culture and to the general community.
The Ethical Society maintains several boxes for donations to various causes.
- Non-Perishable Food Box: You can help by donating non-perishable food items to the Ethical Action Food Project. Buy a couple of extra cans when grocery shopping and place in the marked container in the downstairs hall across from the kitchen.
- Victims of Domestic Violence Box: You can help by donating paper products and non-violent, children's toys. Place the items in the marked container in the downstairs hall across from the kitchen.
- Empty Printer and Toner Cartridges Box (The Big Green Box): Save those empty printer and toner cartridges. We can recycle them. The box is in the Assembly Hall in the northwest corner of the room (near the classrooms).
- Cell Phone Recycle Box (The Big Green Box): Save those old cell phones. We can recycle them. The box is in the Assembly Hall in the northwest corner of the room (near the classrooms).
The Gilpin Fund was established by the Ethical Action Committee in 1993 in honor of past chair, Doris Gilpin. The Fund helps families and others on a temporary basis with utility bills.
A committee from the Ethical Action Committee administers the fund, verifies needs, etc. In 2009, the fund helped 130 families. Most of our funds are given to the working poor, those on disability, social security, or public assistance. The appeals vary from sad to desperate.
Our income is from tax-deductible contributions. We have a tribute Fund to encourage gifts. People in the Ethical Society have given benefits and fundraisers. We hope you will be able to contribute to the generous $2,000.00 matching grant from the Tuesday Women's Association. We thank all of you who already have sent checks.
Groups Internal to the Society
- Tuesday Women's Association The Social Causes Committee of TWA, an Ethical Society group, provides financial support to specific groups that promote Ethical Society interests and values. The group allocates proceeds from its annual bazaar to various organizations, particularly those involved with providing hunger and shelter to the poor, promoting children's welfare, and protecting the environment.
- Ethical Action Committee The Ethical Action Committee, one of the largest committees in the Society, promotes and coordinates ethical social action between the Society and the surrounding community. Subcommittees of the Ethical Action Committee embrace a diversity of political and social viewpoints, including gun control, crime prevention, homeless and poverty issues, and environmental causes.
Groups External to the Society
- Kiva - Micro Loans that Change Lives Our Ethical Society Youth Group is a Kiva lender. Kiva's mission is to connect people around the world through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.
- Senior Connections The Senior Connections program, which is external to the Ethical Society of St. Louis, offers an opportunity for community volunteers to enjoy gratifying new relationships with aging seniors who still have much to contribute to the lives of others.
- FreeRice - Helping to Alleviate World Hunger FreeRice partners with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and the United Nations World Food Program.
