The Candle Lighting Ceremony

Opening: The old light burns low; but, ere it sinks and fails, we kindle from it the crescent flame of a new light. And so, once more, we renew the sacred light of life from year to year, from generation to generation and from age to age.

[Each candle is lit by a member of the congregation designated by the Leader.]

Light of Joy: Burn brightly, Light of Joy, and may your cheerful beams reach every heart and every home through our broad land.
Flame of Peace: Shine, soft Flame of Peace, and dispel the shadows of strife and discord by the power of your pure and healing light.
Light of Goodwill: Throw wide your beams, Light of Goodwill, and unite all hearts in kindly thought and gracious deed.
Light of Hope: When other lights burn low, oh starry Light of Hope, the light of promise in the little child, gleam and sparkle through all the mists of disappointment and misfortune, a blessed beacon of both old and young.
Flame of Love: Glow and grow, you mighty golden Flame of Love, and like the sun in the sky, bathe the wide world in your broadening beams of warmth and light.

Light of Ages (lyrics by Percival Chubb)

Light of Ages, shed by Man
Since the search for Good began,
Shine upon our path today,
Through the mists that cloud our way.

Light of Conscience, clear and still,
Be a beacon to our will:
Like the steadfast northern light,
Guide us in the deepest night.

Light of Knowledge, spread and grow,
As the dawn to noonday glow;
Kindle in our heart of youth
Passion for the perfect Truth.

Light of Love, O may your fire
Purify our soul's desire
And unite us, heart and mind,
In the service of mankind.
